JWU Professor James Griffin Earns Worldchefs Education Award The World Association of Chefs Societies (Worldchefs) announced on October 15 its prestigious Education Award recipient: JWU College of Hospitality Management (COHM) Associate Professor James Griffin, Ed.D., CEC, CCE, CHE . The award is in recognition of Griffin’s significant efforts in the design and launch of the Worldchefs Digital Academy and Pre-Commis Chef course. The 18-hour free online program of study is offered via a web platform and mobile app to entry-level culinarians ages 14-18 and provides students a chance to learn the basic skills required to launch a career in the culinary arts. It is the first free global online pre-professional program. Griffin volunteered to lead the development of the program’s strategy, initial digital curriculum structure, and fundraising efforts. The award is presented every two years. Griffin says, "Education is one of Worldchefs four areas of focus and I share their vision to provide training to young professionals and underprivileged youth globally. The academy provides free culinary training to those most in need while also providing our wonderful industry with a future pipeline of talent." Worldchefs is a global network of chef’s associations founded in 1928 at the Sorbonne in Paris. The venerable Auguste Escoffier was named its first honorary president. Today, this global body has over 90 official member chefs’ associations that represent 10 million professionals worldwide. Worldchefs is a non-political professional organization, dedicated to maintaining and improving the culinary standards of global cuisines. COHM Viewpoint: The State of Our Restaurant Industry We are all experiencing the current stresses and conditions of the restaurant industry in some manner. Much of what is occurring, according to Professor James Griffin , is the result of a loss of control of restaurant stability due to the fixed costs of operating an establishment. View his thoughts on the State of Our Restaurant Industry , one of a series of videos produced by the College of Hospitality Management.
